I had met Jacque years ago through the Yellowstone Club and at several of her friends' weddings. Last year I was flattered when Jacque and Marc asked me to photograph their wedding. I was even more excited when I found out that it was going to be in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. I met up with Jacque and Marc last week to take their engagement portraits and we had such a fun time driving around Paradise Valley finding the perfect backdrop for their bike photographs and a photo with their dog. (If you want to see more of Paradise Valley rent Racho Deluxe which was shot in Livingston in 1975 and starred Jeff Bridges.)

After visiting the valley we went to the frontage road just by my house where I LOVE the view of Livingston Peak just behind the two of them.

I think it looks like a painted backdrop, but I can assure you it is real as well as the snow on the mountains.

Marc had proposed to Jacque while they were in Mexico, which is why they are getting married there with just their closest friends and family. The ring that he was having designed for her wasn't ready yet so instead he wanted to find a purple sucker ring that was Jacque's favorite when she was younger. He searched everywhere for one of the suckers and couldn't find one so instead he bought this acrylic ring from Alara in Bozeman and proposed with that instead.
I had to get a few shots of the two of them with the acrylic engagement ring! I don't know of any other couple that has had one.

Digital Photo Albums. Perfect Gifts for your family.

Bethany and Frank had me photograph their wedding just over a year ago and this past Christmas they had me come over and take some family photos for them. Bethany's six children and their signfigant others were together for about a week and I got to photograph them at their home in Bozeman.

Their photos really captured who they are and their fun relationships with each other. Bethany had Chieko design a Montana Roast Digital album for her and Frank and made six press roast books as a special gift for each of her kids a keepsake for the time they had spent together. I think it is a wonderful way to make sure everyone remembers the time that they got to spend together.

Abrams.Boucherit Wedding

WOW! Holly and Cindy just photographed Julie Boucherit and Seth Abrams wedding at the Ritz Carlton in Sarasota and we are putting the photos up so Vivian, Julie's mom, can share them with her friends at the wedding party that they are throwing for her this afternoon.
Julie looked stunning in her beautiful dress.

Vivian told me that because of the threat of rain Julie and Seth decided at the last minute to move the ceremony up half an hour in order for them to be able to married out on the beach. In order to do so they had to call each and every guest and tell them the time change. Luckily the rain held off until the last person was coming inside the building after the ceremony was over. Half an hour later, the skies cleared, and the most beautiful sunset happened so Holly and Cindy could take these fantastic photos on the beach.

Sometimes everything falls perfectly into place.

Bozeman Bridal Walk

Downtown Bozeman Bridal Walk

The weatherman says that today is supposed to be a perfect spring day. As long as he is telling the truth, I have told my daughter NEVER to date a weatherman because they often tell you what you want to hear and not the truth, today will be a perfect day for a Bridal Walk in Bozeman.

Grab a friend or relative, slip into one of the great coffee shops arm yourself with your favorite drink and a snack to keep inside your purse and then enjoy your day. Once you register at the Baxter you will receive a bag full of goodies and a list of the stores that are participating. The list is long and comprehensive. If you are just starting to plan the details of your wedding it is a perfect way to take a peak of what our great community has to offer. The list of vendors includes Suelto, a lovely lingerie store which is an essential part of any bride’s plans for her wedding. There are many vendors that will be participating including caterers, venues, make-up artists, invitation designers, wedding dress shops,and local photographers.
My advice to each of you is if you meet a vendor who you know you want to work with but can’t work out the details ask them to hold your date. Many vendors will extend the courtesy of holding a date and will give you a call if someone else calls interested in your saved date. As you are strolling see which stores or vendors you respond to in some way and take their card, write a quick note on it about what you liked and stuff it in your bag. (Trust me later on you will say who was that card from and why did I take it?) Once you get home and have a few minutes to settle into all of the information that you gathered you will be able to easily decide who you want to be in more contact with in the future. While the walk is a great information gathering event I believe it is not the perfect place for an in depth conversation about the details of your wedding. Once you have selected the vendors who you like in some way go home look at their web site, give them a call and set up a time to meet. You deserve their undivided attention and I can tell you from the other side that it is a lot easier to get a feel for your personality and style while talking to you in the comfort of my own office without any distractions.

May Issue of Brides Magazine

The most current issue of Brides Magazine has a couple of our photos in it including this one that is the opener for the party and planning section. The article is chock full of great ideas and tips for you to use while you are planning your wedding. You should definitely be subscribing to Brides while you are planning the details of your wedding. Since it has gone monthly it is full of wonderful ideas and thoughts that will make your planning easier and your wedding unique.

This beautiful bouquet was featured in a wedding that took place in Charleston, South Carolina and I just love the combination of flowers that go into the design of it. The bouquet is set off by a lovely handkerchief that the bride used during the ceremony.

The flowers were designed by Lotus Flowers and the wedding was coordinated by Katie Huebel from WED.

Moose Landing and Elk Crossing

A couple of years ago Patty Johnson called me to photograph the Centennial Car here in Livingston and she asked me to take photos of their three other rental properties in Big Sky and Ennis.

When we were working on photographing Elk Landing Patty and her husband Robert were telling me stories about how close the moose come to their other rental property and I thought that they might be exaggerating just a tiny bit. I realized I was wrong again! When we got to Moose crossing there were a pair of moose literally outside the front porch. Here are a couple of photos that I snapped of them. One from inside the house and the other from a not so safe distance on their front porch!

This is my favorite of their rentals for a variety of reasons but primarily for the kitchen that was made out of reclaimed wood. All of the kitchens in the houses come fully equipped with everything you need to cook or bake up a storm.

The upstairs master bedroom is hand painted by Tina, a woman here in Livingston that creates wonderful effects on the walls including this aged wall and the dogs playing cards above the dog washing room.

Thank you Patty and Robert for having me photograph your rentals for you. I look forward to working with you again once the grass gets a bit more green to do some exterior shots.

I have loved working with Priscilla of Priscilla Foster Handmade Books for almost a decade now. Priscilla, who owns Ro Sham Bo Paperie & Handcrafted Arts shop in Bozeman knows simple beauty and how that translates to gorgeous wedding albums. Priscilla customizes her albums from a vast array of fabric choices and crafts the books completely by hand.
I know Priscilla understands the importance of showcasing the treasured moments of a wedding in a book that reflects the exquisiteness of the day.
I've asked Priscilla a few questions below so you can get a feel for her handmade books as well as her background and the love that goes into creating Priscilla Foster Handmade Books.

Where did you learn to make become a bookmaker?
In 1994, while working as a graphic designer for a textile company in Burlington, Vermont, called April Cornell, I took an internship with a woman who owned a small bindery on the shores of Lake Champlain. After that internship I attended many different bookmaking classes, which culminated with my time at The American Academy for Book Arts in Telluride, Colorado.

How long have you been making books?
Fifteen years.

What got you interested in creating wedding albums?
I remember the first handmade wedding album I ever saw.
I was visiting an artist colony in the Old South End Distillery Building in Boston and one of the artists was just starting his small bindery and I bought one of the first albums he ever made for my cousin. I remember at that time thinking that this artist had the coolest job in the world. When I started my own bindery I set out to perfect the handmade wedding album and, as such, developed hinged pages which enable my albums to lay flat when open.

Can you talk a bit about the different albums that you offer?
My first album, and the one that I have been making for the past 15 years is a self-mount, hinged-page album with an exposed binding that is sewn together with satin ribbon. Although these albums require mounting of physical photographs on the pages they are very versatile for someone who is just starting out with album offerings.
I created my first digital album 2 years ago. I call it The Tristan Album after my son. This album is made up of 25 pages of Museo II fine art paper onto which the photos are directly printed. We offer this album as both a self-print album, for those photographers who like to do their own printing, and a printed album. This album has a very vintage feel with the subtle texture of the fine art paper and the side-sewn binding.
The newest addition to our offerings is The Wilder Album, named after my daughter, and it is my answer to the flush mount coffee table album. Being a classically trained bookbinder who has relied largely on hand tools to create all my previous albums, I felt that this kind of album was antithetical to my work. However, after a year of product development and many book blocks later, I now feel like I can claim these albums one of my own. The pages are printed in the lab then UV coated, mounted on a rigid substrate and hinged to create a full panoramic spread. What sets our flush mount album apart from others is our vast selection of silks from which you can design your own cover.

What kind of materials do you use?
I use a variety of fabrics including raw silk, silk shantung, Chinese brocade, silk linen and cotton for my First Year Baby Books. I use only the finest double faced satin for my bindings and decorative Japanese papers for my end sheets (the backside of the cover.) All of my album pages are acid-free which makes for a PH-neutral, archival environment for your photos.

What makes your albums so different from others that are offered?
The main thing that sets my albums apart from any of the other albums available is that I make my own book cloth from raw material. This means that instead of being limited to pre-manufactured rolls of book cloth which make up most album makers cloth options, I can take virtually any fabric and back by hand in order to make it suitable for use as a book covering.
Because I am not tied to a huge inventory of eight book cloth choices I am able to offer my clients a different album each time dependant entirely on their client/studio preferences. My ability to offer so many choices also makes my job a lot more interesting and really empowers my clients to feel a part of the process.

What does the process of creating a book entail? Is it different when making a digital album?
For me the process of creating an album requires understanding what my clients need and being able to guide them to the best album that will suit that need. Once they are settled on the album type they have fun creating their own custom albums from the fabrics and ribbons available on my site. My time in the studio is then spent making sure their vision comes to fruition in the form of a beautiful album in which they can showcase their event.
For me, my time spent in my bindery is the most peaceful and really satisfying time of my day.

Do you have any advice for couples who are creating a digital album?
I have always felt that there is beauty in simplicity. This is as true for the fabric combinations that make up an album as it is for the interior page layout. Try to avoid sensory overload. You’ll be happy you did.

Two Weddings Featured in March Issue of BRIDES

I love shooting weddings in my own Big Sky backyard as much as I love traveling to distant locales to capture a unique wedding. Brides magazine features our photos of two very different weddings in the March 2010 issue. The Brides Weddings Across America piece spotlights our photos in "The Rockies" (near Bozeman) and "The Southeast" (near Charleston, SC).

Rebecca and Mark's destination wedding was sophisticated yet playful at the The Lazy B Barn, just outside of Bozeman. The couple was dedicated to creating a woodsy, organic feel and their personal touches--moose antlers lining the aisles, homemade spiked apple cider in Mason jars, pine seedlings for favors--set the mood.

Esmé had contacted me several months ago about the possiblitily of photographing her wedding in Chattanooga, TN. Mariah Mayfield, her boss and friend, and one of my previous clients and friend, had recommended me. I can't thank Mariah enough for the kind words that she shared with Esmé and John that encouraged them to hire me. I LOVED getting to meet and know J + E, I was able to meet Sebastian, Mariah's little boy and I was able to see Mariah and her parents again.

John, Esmé and I spent some time around her house taking their portraits before their wedding. She had described the driveway leading to her house and I thought it was a perfect spot for photos of the two of them. It was. I love the environmental shots of the two of them together and this one is one of my favorites of Esmé because it shows her personality so well.

We spent a little less than an hour playing around in the variuos spots around the house that I thought would make for a pretty background and these are some of my favorite photos.

This is perhaps my all time favorite photo of a bride. It is so Anthropolgie like.

I LOVED her doorway to the screened in porch.

I arrived and started photographing Esmé getting ready. It was the only time that I photographed a bride and groom getting ready alone. There was a quietness and certainty that the two of them had that I had rarely felt before.

Just outside of the church I saw this lovely little corner that I couldn't resist.

Esmé is one of the most beautiful brides that I have ever photographed.

Inside the church I was not able to move around but LOVE the feeling of this photo with the high rafters and Esmé and John in the foreground.

The reception was held in an art gallery that was brought to life with bright table clothes that were in the same color scheme as some of the paintings.
...with flowers to match.
Cocktails in another room. I LOVE the dot lights on the wall.
Everyone had fun at the photo booth and then used the images in the guestbook.
When Esmé and John arrived their friend and videographer greeted them at the door.

Kirkland.Lehfeldt Bozeman Wedding, Story Mansion

Suzanne's mom contacted me several months ago and asked if I could photograph her daughter's wedding. I am so glad I was available. A few days before the wedding Suzaane and Dylan came by the office just to meet before the wedding and I LOVE them.

Dylan & Suzanne are fun, compassionate people that everyone seems to LOVE.
I think she looks like Grace Kelly in these photos? Don't you?
Suzanne gave Dylan a watch for a gift, even though it wasn't a Montana Watch, I think it is such a smart and LOVELY gift. Evidently Dylan did too because he kept showing it to people!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the shoes.
and the hair feathers. (I told my Keegan, she is only 16, that she needs these in her hair when she gets married.) They are so light and flitter around making everyone feel so glamorous!

I LOVE the girl's toes!!!

This is the third year that I have photographed Kristen and Peter's family. I have to be truthful, when I first starting taking family portraits I thought of them as being VERY difficult. It was hard for me to wrap my mind around making something beautiful that was relatively ordinary. Finally after about a year of struggling I realized that there is a lot of beauty in the ordinary. Those ordinary moments embody who we are and what our relationships are with each other.

I now LOVE capturing the playfulness...
and the scowls....
and those sweet moments that reflect all aspects of the people we love.

Even the fear and terror have a place in the sessions.....

Now I LOVE capturing all aspects of family portrait sessions. I also LOVE watching families evolve and being able to be a part of it for just a little bit.

Wright Family Portraits

I photographed Smith and Beau's wedding several years ago and this is the second year that I have photographed their family.
I just received their holiday card with this sweet photo of Eleanor on it. I LOVED the card so thank you Smith for sending me one.
Family portraits in Montana can be trying. The weather is usually cold when people want to take them. Unfortunately I never made it up to Lewistown to take their photos this summer. However, Eleanor was a great sport and shed her jacket for the sweet photos of her and their new puppy.
We wrapped things up at Chico Hot Springs at the pool. I LOVE baby Eleanor in her boots and suit!
Thank you Smith for being the first woman willing to take photos in the pool. Every time I suggest it to women they think I am crazy and suggest a different option. I LOVE photographs in the water, there is something special about them, especially with all of the steam. It is somehow out of this world....

Next time I promise I will do my best to make the photos happen in the summer.

What makes a great portrait session? In my mind when a couple is really connected and not inhibited anything is possible.

I LOVED working with Katie and Cris. We walked on the frozen lagoon on New Year's Day to get these photos.

How can you resist smiling at this great family portrait. Little Calvin is up for anything. He has a lightheartedness and joy of life that is really unusual nowadays.

Lynn and Eric are close friends of ours and Lynn asked me to take their family photos again. Emmett is a senior and she wanted to take one more set of families before everything changes and Emmett is no longer living with them. I think it is so smart to document these times that are so important as part of a families story.
Another fun diversion for family photos. I try to make it fun and beautiful.
I have to get a photo of my kids doing this.

Sebastian Family

My daughter asked me to drive her and her friends almost four hours to Missoula for Model UN about a month ago. I hemmed and hawed and decided that it would be fun to spend some time in the car with her and her friends. IT WAS GREAT FUN. WE LISTENED TO MUSIC AND THEY SANG ALMOST THE ENTIRE WAY! I WILL DRIVE THEM ANYWHERE IF THEY WILL PROMISE TO SING FOR ME.

Anyway, yet another digression, Danielle had recently been in touch with me about doing their family portraits. (Thank you Marian again for another referral to another really lovely family.) I had photographed Marian and Matt's wedding in 2001 which was my first travel wedding ever and happened to be in Carmel, California. I can't remember how our paths crossed but I am forever grateful. I love Marian and Matt. They are wonderful people in so many ways.

Anyway, my trip to Missoula with Keegan and Danielle and Adam's flexibility made it possible to take their family photos. We spend a little time indoors and then ventured out into the freezing cold and played at the playground until we were all frozen.

I am fortunate enough to work with Priscilla in a variety of ways. She has been making our wedding albums for almost a decade and she owns Ro-Sham-Bo that is a wonderful store for unique gifts and beautiful things.
I also photographed Priscilla and Dave's wedding years ago and get to enjoy taking their family photos every once in awhile.
Again, I love bringing ordinary things into the photo shoot in extraordinary ways. Tristen LOVED getting a ride in the wheel barrow.
Both of the kids had fun feeding their chickens in their coop. If I were willing to be responsible for more living things it would be chickens so I could have fresh eggs every morning.
I LOVE this photo of Tristen. His smile is so sweet. Too bad I don't have one of his baby photos on this computer or I would include it so you could see how he looked just a few years ago.

Heck Senior Portraits by Keegan

Laura Heck called me a few months ago for Sam's senior portraits. Sam and my daughter Keegan went to Twin Pines Montessori school together. Maureen Bright is a talented and gifted teacher. She instilled many morals and ideas of learning into my children that I am forever grateful for. Anyway, it is a bit mind boggling to think that Sam is already graduating. I remember him when he was four.
I suggested to Laura that it might be fun for Keegan and Sam to work together. She and Sam agreed and off they went. Luckily Sam drove them around and Keegan shot this entirely on her own. It was the first time that I wasn't around suggesting places or poses.
I LOVE these photos of Sam. There is such a nice variety of place, composition, expression, and lighting.

Campbell Family: The Woodlands

A tea party in the woods, with a beautiful table cloth and silver. I LOVE helping to create these moments that are a bit out of a story book. I came up with the idea and Elsa had all of the details together to make it look absolutely beautiful.

Elsa and Chuck own the Woodlands in Bozeman and I have known them for several years. Elsa's grace and warmth is infectious. She has a LOVE for life and a sense of style that is LOVELY to be around, and to photograph.

This is one of my favorite photos of their family.

I LOVE the emotion and the ethereal feeling the sun gives as it peaks through the forest.

Elsa had warned me that we would be on the move the entire time. She was telling the absolute truth. The good news was that we got to explore all around the grounds at the Woodlands which is absolutely beautiful. The hard part of it was capturing some lovely group shots. I always try to get some more traditional photos along with the more spontaneous candid photos so that all members in the extended family will have something that they can relate to and enjoy in their home.
Then there was the couch. I suggested we bring it outdoors into the beautiful woods. I like to do this for a couple of reasons. One it is beautiful, which is most important. Secondly it is comfortable, which is almost as important. Three it is something novel, which is perhaps even more important than the other two reasons because it makes people be able to stop thinking about having their photos taken and makes them enjoy something they haven't experienced before.

So sweet!!

Jeff's Family

I met Jeff last year through a friend when he helped move my mother-in-laws piano. He said he wanted some photos of his daughter and that he would call me. I assumed that he wouldn't. How many times has a man scheduled a family portrait session with me? Up until a few months ago the answer was NEVER. Jeff called me about a month before his wife's birthday. He wanted me to take some photos of their daughter so he could give them to Sarah for her present.
We talked about wardrobe. The LOVELY Angie Devine helped out and gave Jeff some of her beautiful clothes for the shoot.

We managed to have the photos taken, Jeff popped into our office chose the photos he wanted enlarged, worked with a frame shop around the corner. We delivered the prints to the frame shop while he was out of town. He was able to give Sarah some wonderful portraits of their beautiful daughter. What a thoughtful idea and gift.

I hadn't met Christian but had heard that he was a great soccer player at Park High. Luckily our cold snap of TWO weeks broke and we had great weather a couple of days ago, well except for the wind.

i LOVE how the soccer ball is part of who he is.

Yet again it was so nice to be able to hang out with a high school senior for an hour and hopefully create some photos that he and his family will love. I hope some of his family in Ireland will enjoy them too!

Here are some of the photos that Keegan took of Mary that I really LOVE. Keegan found this great location that has amazing light for indoor portraits. Unfortunately it is pretty windy here in Livingston so it is nice to have an indoor alternative for portraits.

This year Keegan has photographed two senior's for their yearbook photographs. She does such a great job and I am so proud of her.
